Aargh! Firefox 3.6 is adding tabs in the middle!

I , presumably along with a lot of other people upgraded to FireFox 3.6 this week. Most of the changes are 'under the bonnet' so to speak; but there are a few differences in the UI as well.

Now, when you open a link as a 'new tab', the tab appears next to the one you currently have open; instead of at the far right hand end of the bar as before.

If, like me, this gets your goat then there is an easy solution.

Type about:config into the address bar, click "I'll be careful, I promise" on the nanny screen and filter the results for browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent . Double-click the entry to flip it from 'true' to 'false', and you're done.

XP update can cause Blue Screen Of Death

From The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/11/ms_bsod_update_glitch/

Seemingly applying the latest gargantuan wad of updates to Windows XP can cause some systems to crash when they are rebooted. Starting Windows in Safe Mode has no effect, affected machines will reboot constantly.

Apparently what you need to do is boot any affected system with a Windows CD, start the 'recovery console' and uninstall the 'MS10-015' update.

Bad updates have happened before, and will happen again, so be aware...

EDIT: It transpires that the issue is probably caused by infection with a rootkit; more here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/15/rootkit_blue_screen_culprit_probably/

Still using Internet Explorer?

It may not be a good idea, for now anyway. Microsoft have admitted that there is a critical security flaw which was exploited in the recent attacks on Google by hackers in China - and the code has apparently been made available for other hackers to take advantage. The German and French governments are advising their citizens to stop using IE until the flaw is fixed, although the UK govt doesn't seem to have issued any response.

Phishers sharp and on the ball

Those email scam artists must keep up-to-date with the business news; now I'm getting phishing emails from "Santander Bank" instead of "Abbey National"!

In other news my heating is still all to cock, and I've just had a £350 electric bill for the pleasure.. It's just what you need, the coldest winter in 40-odd years and the heating is running at 17p/kWh instead of 5p.. grrr/brrrr (delete as appropriate).
